SCWS has been fabricating structural steel in Dereham, Norfolk, since 1966. Nearly sixty years on, it is one of the region's largest steelwork contractors, designing, fabricating and erecting structural steel for the construction industry across the UK. The group brings three businesses together on one 18-acre site: SCWS Ltd for design and fabrication, Anglian Erection Services for site erection and crane work, and Steelmasters for steel stockholding. That means the steel you cut, weld, paint or bolt together is handled by SCWS people from the yard to the finished frame.

A serious place to build a career in steel

Few employers in Norfolk can offer this scale of workshop. The Dereham site has a 20,000 m² fabrication facility served by 20 overhead cranes and a range of industry-leading equipment, with capacity for up to 300 tonnes of fully coated structural steelwork every week, including intumescent fireproofing applied in-house. For welders, platers, fabricators, painters, CAD technicians and yard staff, that translates into steady, varied work on proper kit, not a cramped shed with a single crane. Out on site, Anglian Erection Services runs its own modern fleet of mobile cranes, and every erection team is led by CITB and CSCS qualified supervisors.

Work you can point to

SCWS steel is standing in projects most people would recognise. The portfolio includes the IKEA store at Southampton and its spiral car-park entrance, the Peter Jones store on Sloane Square, offices at One Lothbury in the City of London, a new stand at Trent Bridge cricket ground in Nottingham, the Portsmouth waste-to-energy power station, new schools in Slough and Enfield, and apartment blocks closer to home in Norwich. Retail, education, sport, energy and residentia, the variety keeps the work interesting and the skills broad.

Safety that is taken seriously

The company says plainly that it is "committed to Health, Safety and Welfare of our employees and those affected by our activities", and it backs that up with a system of inductions, method statements, safety training standards, risk assessments, toolbox talks and regular audits. All site operatives hold CSCS registration and the certification relevant to their work. SCWS is CHAS accredited, holds SCCS certification and CE marking, and describes itself as proud of its safety record in both the workshop and on site. For anyone who has worked somewhere that cut corners, that matters.

Local roots, long-term stability

SCWS is a Norfolk business that has grown steadily rather than chased headlines. Operating from the same town for nearly six decades, with its own erection company and its own stockholder, it controls the whole process and does not depend on other people's yards or cranes. Its stated aims are simple, "accuracy, quality and punctuality" and the customers who keep coming back are the proof.

If you want to work with structural steel at real scale, for a long-established company with its own workshop, its own cranes and a safety culture that is more than a poster on the wall, SCWS in Dereham is worth talking to.
