Clarkson Evans is the UK's largest electrical and solar subcontractor for new homes.
Founded in Gloucester in 1981, the company now wires over 24,000 new homes a year for the country's leading housebuilders, working from 22 branches across England and Wales. Around 950 people make up the team, including roughly 700 directly employed, site-based electricians and apprentices — not agency labour, but a permanent workforce the company has invested in for more than four decades.
Most of Clarkson Evans' work is first-fix and second-fix on live housing developments, so you're on well-run sites with the same builders and the same colleagues week after week. Since 2022 the company has also grown a solar PV arm, giving electricians the chance to add renewables to their skill set as new-build regulations move towards low-carbon homes. The company's own phrase for what it looks for is "pride in the job", and its culture is built around technical standards, doing the work properly and looking after the people who do it.
Training is at the heart of the business. Clarkson Evans opened its first purpose-built training centre in 1999 and today runs one of the largest electrical apprenticeship programmes in the country. It has been named a Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer in both 2024 and 2025 and holds a Princess Royal Training Award. That commitment shows in the leadership: over 70% of managers in technical roles first joined the company as apprentices. Whether you're starting out or already qualified, there are short courses in EV charging, inspection and testing, solar PV and ventilation, and a clear path towards supervisory and management roles.
The company describes its approach as "flexible and supportive" rather than one-size-fits-all. Staff have access to trained mental health first aiders, wellbeing support through the Lighthouse Club construction charity, discounted gym membership and an accredited Healthy Workplace at head office. A staff-run "Social Sparks" committee organises events and charity fundraising throughout the year.
Clarkson Evans was named Subcontractor of the Year at the Housebuilder Awards in 2023, ECA Large Contractor of the Year in 2019, and holds a RoSPA President's Award for health and safety. It is accredited with CHAS and SMAS and is a member of the Home Builders Federation.
If you want steady work, proper training and a company that promotes from within, Clarkson Evans is worth a serious look.
