Are you inquisitive, do you like solving problems, do you want to really enjoy what you do, and do you want your work to make a difference?

If so, then joining HMRC's Data Science team could be your perfect job. We are looking for someone who isn't afraid to challenge the status quo; who can work both individually and as part of a team, and most importantly someone who has a passion for data science!

Our team operate at the cutting edge of data science and technology, using a wide range of data and analytics approaches and tools to support the strategic objectives of the department and to help solve some of the key challenges: whether that's ensuring HMRC collects the right taxes; pays out the right financial support; making it easier for our customers to get their taxes right; or supporting wider government economic aims.

The team consists of a mixture of analytical and IT professionals and data scientists, working very closely with data architects, engineers and other IT professionals to ensure that when data science products are developed, they are able to be deployed and made available to the people who need them, so that actions can be taken as a result of the insight and analysis delivered.

Projects, which are undertaken using Agile ways of working, can result in a range of data science products, including tailored interactive dashboards, machine learning models or impactful analysis and insight, all driving increased understanding of our customers and processes, as well as real change within the organisation.

To develop and deliver these products the team primarily utilise a scalable cloud environment, with access to a range of ever-developing analytical tools (including R, Python, SAS, Power BI) and full version control software (Git, GitLab).

The wider team have recently been responsible for supporting major transformation programmes across Customer Services, Customer Compliance Group and elsewhere, including playing a critical role in the team delivering the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Job description

This role is to head up our new Industrialisation Team, ensuring the successful delivery and live support of our data science products to the internal users. You will work as part of a supportive multi-disciplinary team, as well as individually on projects.

Your primary role will be to establish and lead the Industrialisation and IT team, a newly created team responsible for ensuring data science products are developed to required standards, delivered into the business appropriately and properly supported. This role builds on recent work to develop a ""Data Science - Industrialisation Process"", a process designed to ensure products meet all the necessary standards and requirements for a live and strategic service, such as accessibility, security, architecture, and ongoing support.

Alongside that you may work on projects with other data scientists, using those analytical tools and environments (cloud environment with R, Python and SAS, as well as PowerApps) to help develop and deliver data science products including processing pipelines, interactive dashboards, machine learning models, as well as statistical analysis and insight; working closely with the intended customers and business experts to scope and design the most effective and appropriate product.

You will also be given ample opportunity and support for personal and professional development, including upskilling on tools, approaches, and techniques, with the expectation of cross team development and mentoring: if you learn something cool, share it! A lot of the development opportunities will be driven by your ideas and interests, as well as by the skills needed for particular projects. Overall, you will be given a lot of freedom to decide the best way for you to work and also what and how you'd like to grow as a data scientist.

Responsibilities

• Supporting the cloud platform used by data scientists, including the opportunity to help develop it further.

• Ownership of the Data Science Industrialisation Process, ensuring it evolves to meet future needs and provides the assurances required.

• Opportunity to help develop and set standards for product development and best practice.

• Responsibility for developing our approach and providing live support to end-users.

• Planning and prioritisation of work, including management of a small multi-grade team.

Essential Criteria:

• Experience of coding (i.e. SAS, R, Python).

• Experience of accessing and using data, and an understanding how analysts and data scientists use that data.

• Understanding of the product life cycle, from development through to delivery.

Desirable Criteria:

• Ability to use and adapt data science techniques intelligently.

• Experience of managing staff and a service.

However, there will be ample opportunity to develop these skills within the post.

Technical skills

We'll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process:

* Programming and build (data science)

* Understanding product delivery across the life cycle
