Job Details

JOB ROLE

  • To have 24-hour responsibility for the provision of specialist palliative nursing services to meet the individual needs of patients on the Inpatient Unit. To be accountable for defining and ensuring that agreed professional standards are reflected in practice within the nursing team. To be accountable for the overall management of the nursing team, recruitment, deployment, and supervision of staff ensuring the co-ordination of all services provided to the patients. Optimise the cost-effective use of all resources. To identify the core and extended competencies required by clinical staff and develop a learning evidenced based programme to support staff to achieve them. To provide professional visible leadership. To work in collaboration with other service managers internally and externally to develop integrated services for patients and their carers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To provide clinical leadership and management support to the Inpatient Unit (IPU) team, ensuring that the highest standards of holistic nursing care are provided through supervision and operational management of the unit. Develop and implement a model of nursing care which ensures each patient has an individual care plan which includes assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care. Work with the multi-disciplinary team to provide a high standard of specialist palliative care to patients and their carers within the hospice. To be part of the clinical on call rota. To participate in multi-disciplinary meetings. To attend clinical meetings relevant to role as required. Act as a specialist resource for patients, carers, and non-specialist groups of staff. Maintain accurate, up-to-date staff and patient records. To maintain specialist expertise underpinned by theory and to maintain clinical contact so to act as a role model to nursing staff.

CLINICAL GOVERNANCE

  • Play a key role in MSH clinical governance programme, participating in and supporting research and audit both within the Hospice, regionally and nationally. Develop clinical protocols to facilitate practice developments, benchmarking where possible, to ensure that staff adhere to best evidence-based practice and makes optimum use of resources to achieve the highest standards of care and service. Maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, staff, and volunteers, ensuring that staff and volunteers are aware of their responsibility in relation to health and safety, and cleanliness. Investigate all accidents, untoward incidents and complaints and ensure that appropriate action is taken in accordance with agreed policies and procedures. Take an active role in quality assurance initiatives, including the setting and auditing of standards and implementing resulting action plans. Organise learning and development resources using agreed methods and frameworks. Collect and collate data and keep knowledge and information systems up to date using set procedures. Be aware of organisational strategic direction and future issues pertaining to the provision of specialist palliative care and supportive care. Report quarterly key performance indicators (KPI) to Matron, as requested.

EDUCATION

  • Promote an environment conducive to the development needs of all staff, including volunteers, and participate in the teaching of all staff including clinical staff, student nurses, visiting students and volunteers. Support nursing staff development using the MSH competency framework. Develop and lead in induction programmes for all new staff. Take responsibility for system wide cascade of relevant external and internal education events to staff and volunteers.

INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND GOVERNANCE

  • To be proficient in operating IT systems and use information systems to generate reports for analysis and performance to aid decision making. Champion safe information governance within the organisation. To work within the policies, procedures, codes of practice and clinical guidelines of The Mary Stevens Hospice and professional bodies.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Education/Qualification:

Essential:

  • RN adult current NMC registration. Educated to degree level in a relevant subject. Evidence of continuing professional development.

Desirable:

  • Diploma or degree in palliative care. V300 qualification. Management qualification. Mentorship qualification.

Skills Abilities:

Essential:

  • Ability to contribute as part of a team to a dynamic environment. Excellent communication skills both written and verbal. Ability to offer mutual support and demonstrate a ‘can-do attitude.’ Ability to manage own time, ward workload and prioritise effectively. Problem solving and decision making. Good leadership skills. Evidence of staff development. Clinical credibility innovative approach to practice. Ability to manage conflicting demands on time.

Desirable:

  • Led developments in practice. Advanced communication skills. IT skills. Financial management. Clinical supervision. Experience of staff rota planning.

Experience:

Essential:

  • Experience of working at Band 6 level or above. Team leader/management experience. Demonstrable experience of change management.

Desirable:

  • Experience working in specialist palliative care.
