Revenue & Customs Digital Technology Services (RCDTS) are working alongside HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and embarking on an ambitious and challenging digital transformation programme which will result in HMRC becoming one of the most digitally advanced tax authorities in the world.

RCDTS was set up in 2015 as a subsidiary of HMRC’s Chief Digital & Information Officer Group and has one of the largest customer bases in the world.

The Team

An exciting time to be working for CDIO, the Borders and Trade (B&T) team is an integral part of the group with a focus on developing, delivering and supporting high-profile IT solutions which are the cornerstone of the HMRC Customs, Excise and International Trade business.

Covering a complex range of business operations and using a variety of technical platforms we develop, deliver and provide end-to-end service management for over 100 separate applications many with exceptionally high volumes of transactions and challenging deadlines.

We work with conscientious, positive people who grow with the challenge of delivering transformation on a huge scale, and who already have real hands-on experience of driving through both technical and business changes.

Role and Responsibilities:

Working across mixed-experienced teams and using a variety of technologies from Oracle web technologies to Ansible playbooks with Java web apps, you will be involved in all stages of the project lifecycle contributing to the design, build and deployment of innovative solutions for complex systems. Having a solid knowledge of development processes and networks is key to the role.

The successful candidate will understand DevOps activities including transforming technical requirements into DevOps processes, delivering automated software components that form part of a Dev Ops toolchain, managing test environments as well as identifying and resolving issues preventing delivery.

You will demonstrate the ability to perform a range of complex and non-routine work under the general direction from your team and you will engage and work closely with other technical teams using a continuous integration/delivery pipeline.

You will be expected to take a logical, analytical approach to problem solving and pay close attention to detail.

Duties will include:

* Design and configure enterprise level software for delivery of project features.

* Continuous integration of software through automation.

* Configure and administer git source code repositories.

* Configure and understand cloud computing technologies.

* Pro-actively develop relevant technology and best practice knowledge and experience.

* Research and learn new programming tools and techniques.

* Make improvement recommendations e.g. tooling and monitoring.

* Design core scripts to automate maintenance and alerting tasks.

* Effectively and consistently implement Agile methodologies using appropriate tools such as Confluence and Jira.

* Using excellent oral and written communication skills, engage with a range of stakeholders.

Essential criteria

You will have a strong knowledge and understanding, as well as demonstrable experience of:

* Operating Systems Administration skills: Linux, Windows, Networking.

* Environment management, automation and scripting skills e.g. Shell/Python/Perl scripts

* Integrating deployment and automation toolsets into an operational solution.

* Continuous build, automated deployment, testing and integration methodology and tooling experience e.g. Jenkins/Maven/Nexus/Ansible or similar.

* Using version source control systems such as Subversion or Git.

* Debugging a complex multi-server service common web application / integration architectures (SOA).

* Working within a product-centric environment.

* Application programming (Java is ideal), security, operations, networking and design.

Desirable

Ideally you will also have knowledge and understanding of:

* Managing your workload across multiple concurrent projects each needing DevOps input

* Oracle database development

* Development environment virtualisation (e.g. AWS)

* Agile / Scrum Projects

* Agile tooling such as Jira and Confluence

Some travel to other HMRC sites may be required as part of this role (e.g. Southend)
