We need creative and innovative talent, to join our already excellent team, to help us make a real difference to residents, businesses and visitors travelling in and around the West Midlands.

We are recruiting for a Communications and Engagement Manager to encourage the community to reshape their behaviour and travel more sustainably. This is a huge project where you will lead on the communication and engagement for a multimillion cycling and walking project. This role will provide you with an opportunity to be involved with a wide variety of schemes.

We need the community to develop leaner and cleaner behaviours and it will be your role to encourage the West Midlands to lead a greener lifestyle. Working within a developing communications function, you will manage the marketing and promotional side of the cycling and walking scheme so that people will understand how cycling and walking can become part of their daily routine.

This is a Fixed Term Contract until March 2023 but the role has the potential to be extended.

What will you be doing?

* Handle media communications and ensure that they are promoting cycling and walking initiatives

* Work closely with the Cycling Commissioner, Partners, local authorities and national cycling bodies to achieve mayoral priorities

* Gather and maintain business intelligence on people and places to inform strategy, design and delivery across the programme and brief senior management for meetings with stakeholders

* Lead on the organisation of launches, completion ceremonies and photo calls to promote and raise awareness

* Manage the development of reports, presentations, public and trade press releases and web and social media material

* Ensure all of the projects have up-to-date information regarding the nature and progress of the programme by attending team briefs, providing reports for the Mayor’s office or media as required and delivering presentations and briefings to senior boards

* Manage any campaigns within budget and raise any areas of concern in line with our procurement and financial policies

* Undertake data analysis and market research

* Provide updates on social media channels and the website by working with the digital communications team

* Work on any other government projects that arise within Transport for West Midlands or the West Midlands Combined Authority

Cycling & walking play a key role in creating a sustainable transport network that meets the travel needs of local businesses and communities – connecting people to opportunities and improving choice, convenience, affordability and safety across the West Midlands for all citizens.

Our aim is to make the whole of the West Midlands better connected and more prosperous by creating attractive urban environments in city and town centres, along key transport corridors and within our suburbs, to position cycling and walking as the optimal travel choices for transport and for leisure. The West Midlands cycling and walking network will see significant investment over the next few years and will benefit from historic levels of funding, helping to create a place that is fit for the future, safe, green and connected. Our ambitious plans include improved infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians, as well as delivering supporting activities such as training and campaigns.

About you

It is essential that you have experience with the media, press releases and writing stories and you will need to have a background in marketing and digital communications.

You will need to be a strong communicator and be able to forge and maintain long lasting relationships with our Partners so stakeholder management experience is a must.

You will thrive working under pressure and be comfortable with managing large scale communications projects.

It would be desirable if you have experience of developing and managing communication projects that encourage behaviour change, within the community. It would also be great if you had experience of managing a team and working within or with the public sector, transport sector or a political organisation.

Ideally you will have an appropriate qualification - CIM/IDM and experience in data and intelligence communication strategies would be advantageous.
