Learning Support Practitioner Derwen @ Telford - starting salary of £18,000 per annum

Derwen College is an Ofsted “Outstanding” college and we have opened an exciting new centre in Telford. Following our successful satellite model, this new provision will support students with SEND, enabling them to live the life they choose by providing a quality curriculum, meaningful work experience and enhancing independent living skills.

We are recruiting for a Learning Support Practitioner to become part of this new team.

Role Purpose:

To enable our students to transform their lives by helping them to attain their aspirations - promoting independence, developing life, work and personal care skills, during college life and the work place in line with student aspirations and outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Encourage and support students to use their time appropriately promoting a healthy lifestyle and learning
  • Contribute to creating an environment that focuses on the learning, wellbeing and quality of life of the people we support
  • Support and lead in the delivery of the vocational and extended curriculum including the embedding of functional skills and work experience in line with Ofsted requirements (in liaison with the Lead Teacher)
  • Plan and prepare appropriate learning materials (in liaison with the Lead Teacher)
  • Use of multimedia technology; including computers, communication aids, college systems
  • Administration work relating to role; including undertaking learner records, session planning and progress recording
  • Provide pastoral support to students where appropriate
  • Undertake role of Personal Tutor or Mentor and participate in person centred planning and the student review process
  • Enhance the quality of life of our students preventing and reducing behaviours of concern by embedding the college Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) strategy
  • Embrace change positively and adapt new ways of working where appropriate to continually improve and maintain the quality of the provision
  • Role model best practice within the organisation 
  • Person Specification:
  • Experience of working with young people with SEND and/or EBD (Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties)
  • Specialist (Learning Difficulties) Qualification desirable, not essential but willing to work towards
  • Be willing to undertake training in Positive Behaviour Support
  • Knowledge of Ofsted framework, CQC, other external quality standards
  • Excellent communication skills at all levels
  • Experience of Makaton desirable, however, not essential as full training will be provided
  • Very good organisational skills, accuracy and attention to detail
  • Functional Skills qualification or similar in English and Maths at Level 2
  • Ability to use own initiative
  • Excellent team working
