Support Practitioner - Waking Nights (Short Breaks). Based in Oswestry, Shropshire offering a salary of £21,100 per annum.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Support Practitioner - Waking Nights (Short Breaks) to join our Care Team. You will work within our Short Breaks Provision to maintain a stable and caring environment that puts the health, safety and welfare of our guests first.

Derwen College has extended its programme of short breaks for young adults with learning difficulties and disabilities to provide specialist holiday care and activities all year round. 

Guests can take part in a range of activities and trips, as well as making use of the campus facilities. Holidays are also a great opportunity for young people to meet new people and explore local attractions. There are a wide range of activities on offer depending on guests’ preferences and the weather. Daily activities may include swimming, basketball, use of the gym and football, day trips, shopping, cooking, bowling and cinema.

Short breaks are available for any period of time from one day to a fortnight. The facility is open 50 weeks a year, only closing for two weeks over Christmas.

The key role responsibilities of the Support Practitioner - Waking Nights are:

  • Liaise with Lead Practitioner for handover purposes
  • Deal with emergencies and where appropriate liaise with on call management
  • Take an active role in supporting guests to develop their personal care and daily life skills
  • Provision of pastoral support to guests in liaison with families and key support services
  • Contribute to the production of positive behaviour support plans
  • Deliver effective student support regarding behaviours of concern
  • Safeguarding awareness and promotion in all aspects of the role to promote the welfare of adults at risk

Person Specification:

  • Proven success of working within a similar role
  • Excellent organisation skills
  • Subject specific qualifications would be an advantage
  • A caring, compassionate and empathic nature
  • Outstanding communication skills with individuals/staff at all levels
  • Knowledge of the CQC framework and external quality standards
  • Highly motivated individual
  • Competent in MS Office
