Cemetery Operative – Nottingham (Temp Contract)

Salary: £ £10.00ph

Full-Time (37 hours)

Job Purpose:

To carry out full burial duties including grave and backfilling sexton duties and associated admin and the provision of appropriate assistance to officials and mourners at the graveside and liaison with the administration team. To perform grounds maintenance and cleansing duties in order to maintain the environment, buildings and facilities at any of the City Wide Cemetery’s and Parks as required. To ensure High Standards of Customer Care at all times.

Accountabilities:

To undertake the full range of craft skilled gardening duties, including mowing, strimming, shrub maintenance and hedge cutting to high quality workmanship. This will involve competence and experience with the use of current modern hand power tools and plant. The work would normally be carried out within agreed timescale and without supervision.
The added responsibility of supervising a small group of gardeners working on site, including temporary responsibility for apprentices, trainees and/or students.
To take responsibility for meeting operational targets, and also for human resources, plant, machinery, fuels and facilities, including the preparation of basic routine documentation.
To be responsible for the application of chemicals under control in line with the current legislation.
To have regard to the solemn and emotive issues of burial and the degree of distress likely to affect decisions made. To be prepared to encounter and handle coffined remains for burial. To be able to act firmly and quickly as situations demand, in order to minimize potential distress to mourners.
To plan and prepare for the burial process taking into consideration coffin and grave dimensions, soil type, grave density, excavation methods, soil management, shoring, seasonal effects, ceremonial and religious requirements and health and safety requirements. To operate a mechanical excavator in a graveyard setting in a safe yet dignified manner. To undertake daily maintenance of excavator. Manual digging may also be necessary. To use soil management techniques to minimize disruption to grave and to maintain the dignified appearance of a cemetery. To undertake shoring if an excavated grave using appropriate methods and to construct a suitably safe access platform surrounding a grave.
To plan and establish the routes and timings of funeral corteges. To attend a burial and take any emergency assistance as might be appropriate. To back-fill and reconstitute the grave after burial and finish of/complete the grave according to instructions. To attend to the burial of cremated remains according to instructions. To liaise with and inform mourners, clergy, funeral directors and other officials as necessary using tact and dignity.
To participate in the exhumation of remains as necessary.
To maintain graveside landscape and horticulture according to cemetery policy and agreed family wishes.
To drive and utilize Council vehicles as required. To undertake any driving duties as and when required, particularly ride on type of machinery.
To assist the memorial safety team as they conduct their safety checks and ensure associated maintenance is in place.
