At Portsmouth City Council we’re all about developing our staff, because we want to build a bigger and better city but we need the best employees to do so.

With a little over 207,000 residents and 8,000 businesses throughout this city, this unitary authority’s main goal is to ensure the best care and development of all those within the city. From customer service to Multi-million pound projects, our residents are at the heart of everything we do.

Your New Role

We are the Infrastructure Section, which forms part of the City Council’s Regeneration Directorate.

We focus on three core areas, which are coastal and drainage, highways and project management and work on a variety of civil engineering projects across the city of Portsmouth to support the realisation of the Council’s Plan. We aim to produce exemplar work, through recordable and monitored processes, to a high standard, that others aspire towards.

In this role you will support senior engineers and successfully design and deliver highway and/or structures schemes from inception through to completion. Schemes will range from small junction improvements through to multimillion pound major projects. You will propose scheme options and prepare designs from inception through to detailed design and subsequent implementation, as well as establish agreed solutions with interested parties, which meet engineering and environmental considerations. You will prepare estimates, monitor and review project costs to ensure completion within agreed budgets and prepare, tender and assess contract documentation. You will represent the team and Council at meetings and maintain technical expertise in new methods and technologies.

What you’ll need to succeed

You will need to be educated to degree or Higher National Diploma level in Civil Engineering or have equivalent experience. Ideally you will have an appropriate professional qualification (for example CEng or IEng) together with membership of the appropriate professional body, or clear evidence you are working towards this. You should have the ability to carry out engineering projects up to £500,000 from initiation to completion without continual direction. You will have a good level of technical expertise and be able to consistently deliver projects to programme and budget. You will have experience of contract documentation preparation and good communication and reporting skills. You will be able to liaise with internal and external stakeholders and offer advice and mentoring to colleagues.

What you’ll get in return

As well as highly competitive pay you’ll receive all the benefits of working within a local authority organisation, which ranges from flexible working hours to a fantastic pension which allows you the opportunity to pay in more for that greater return. Annual leave starts at 26 days going up to 30 days and staff discounts for travel and local shops. We wish to support all our staffs development throughout, if that’s progression planning or involvement within the on the job apprenticeship scheme we will work together to drive your career.
