Media Relations Officer – Hull

Salary: £ 15.33ph

Full-Time (37 hours)

Job Purpose:

To create, plan, manage and implement PR/media strategies and projects in order to promote and influence a positive image and reputation of the Council amongst all key audiences and stakeholders.
To provide professional and effective PR/media relations support, advice and guidance to key decision makers, including chief officers, the Cabinet, other senior members and officers, and partners where appropriate
To build relationships with the media and communicate the Council’s role, vision, priorities and services to ensure positive and balanced coverage in local, regional, national and specialist media.
Accountabilities:

Formulates and manages media and public relations plans to deliver the Authority’s media and communications strategies. Manages relationships with local, regional, national and specialist media to ensure positive and balanced coverage of issues impacting on the Council, its services and its reputation.
Develops corporate responses to inspections and reports providing draft confidential responses for both negative and positive outcomes to promote the most positive Council response.
Utilises social media channels and social media monitoring techniques to support the delivery of council’s overall communication and marketing strategy.
Develops and delivers media training to members, officers through formal training sessions and, on an issue by issue basis, through day-to-day contact and advice.
Influences and advises members and senior managers within the Authority and partner organisations on media issues.
Evaluates media and public relations activity to assess it effectiveness, impact and value and uses the results to influence future strategy.
Formulates, recommends and implements strategies for handling the media in crisis situations, including out-of-hours responses and support.  This includes: preparation of holding statements; organising press briefings and conferences; working with media officers in other agencies to ensure the Council’s role is recognised and fairly represented as part of a co-ordinated response; advising, briefing and preparing Council spokespeople to undertake media interviews.
Researches, writes and issues news releases and statements and responds to media enquiries as appropriate.
Influences and advises members and senior managers within the Authority and partner organisations on media issues.
The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and associated legislation places responsibilities for health and safety on Hull City Council, as your employer and you as an employee of the council. In addition to the Councils overall duties, the post holder has personal responsibility for their own health & safety and that of other employees; additional and more specific responsibilities are identified in the Council’s Corporate H&S policy.
