Job Details

Ruskin Mill Trust provides students with holistic learning by role modelling positive relationships in the fields of arts, crafts, commerce, agriculture, nutrition, living skills and the environment. Working with young people aged 16-25 years with complex behaviour, and learning difficulties and disabilities, including autistic spectrum conditions, whose needs cannot be met in mainstream settings.

Using the insights of Rudolf Steiner, John Ruskin and William Morris, Ruskin Mill Trust works with hand, head, heart and place to provide students with the tools to transform material through craft activities, and in doing so transform themselves. Argent College is the most recent college provision delivering Ruskin Mill Trust’s unique method of Practical Skills Therapeutic Education.

The curriculum includes a range of practical and vocational activities to help an individual develop their self-awareness and self-confidence, as well as preparing them with transferable skills for life after college. Students are also able to attain achievement awards and qualifications.

We are looking to recruit a

BAKER / SOUS CHEF

£20,029.00 - £24,229.07 per annum

Salary dependent upon qualifications and experience

40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year

We are seeking an experienced chef who has an artistic flair for baking to work with our students to produce small batch quantities of high quality organic bread and pastries along with main menu dishes at the Sunday Times acclaimed ‘Hive Café and Bakery’ whilst providing work experience opportunities for students and service users within the Argent College provision.

Experience, Knowledge and Skills:

  • Appropriate experience of operating in a catering role;
  • Skilled baker/sous chef;
  • Experience of budget management and cash handling;
  • Well organised, able to meet deadlines and have a good eye for detail;
  • Empathy and commitment to working with young people who present challenge;
  • Food Hygiene certificate;
  • Experience of menu design and creation using fresh, seasonal, organic ingredients.

Main Duties to include:

  • To produce small quantities of artisan breads, pastries and other food dishes, liaising with the Café and Hospitality Manager and staff to ensure that supply and demand meets both business need and customer demand;
  • To create new and exciting breads and pastries that engage customer interest and attract sales following both traditional and modern recipes;
  • To be responsible for maintaining a high standard of health and safety and food hygiene including the cleaning of the bakery using environmentally friendly products;
  • To provide meaningful work experience opportunities for students and service users within the Argent College provision.
