Highclere Castle has an exciting opportunity for a full time Accounts Clerk / Visitor Arrivals Manager

Highclere castle has become well known as the location of the successful TV series Downton Abbey and attracts thousands of visitors and many events throughout the year. Highclere is also a working estate with its own farming and property management businesses.

This is a varied role with the main responsibilities to include inputting Castle cost invoices and filing records of transactions, noting payments to suppliers and their balances and advising management if there are account issues. Managing collection of visitors tickets, cash and card payments and ensuring end of day totals are properly accounted for and cash entered onto bank paying in books.

The successful candidate will also be responsible for sourcing and supervising car parking staff, managing rotas and will be responsible for H&S protocols for the arrival of cars and coaches and how car parking staff organise the visitor arrival experience.

The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic, well organised, and self-motivated person who will work well as part of a team in a busy environment where no two days are the same.

It is essential that the candidate has good communication skills, both written and verbal and is comfortable working outdoors, with the public in all sorts of weather conditions. They will be required to work public holidays, evenings and weekends during the busy public opening season which runs through the Spring and Summer months.

Duties include:

Accounts

  • Authorising and recording cost invoices, credits, payments
  • Reconcile suppliers’ statements and check direct debits payment requests
  • Place some purchase orders as requested.
  • Prepare ad hoc reports as required.
  • Note cash and card totals from visitors and fill in bank paying in books on a daily basis when Castle is open to visitors

Visitor Arrivals

  • Sourcing part time car parking staff 
  • Supervising car parking staff and rotas throughout the year
  • Liaising with the Security and Castle Manager regarding events and parking requirements
  • Manning kiosk and responsible for ticket collection on event days

The role will require a general willingness to work as a team member and assist with any tasks that might reasonably be requested.

 Qualifications and experience required for this role:

  • 5 A-C GCSEs - Maths essential
  • Previous experience in a similar role desirable
  • An interest in gaining a good knowledge of the history of the Castle
  • Ability to prioritise, manage own workload and work under pressure
  • “Can Do” attitude
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • An understanding of Health and Safety and Risk Assessments would be helpful.
  • Enthusiasm to provide the highest quality service at all times
  • Computer literate with sound knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word and Excel to perform required tasks.
