Software Engineer, East Sussex, £30,000 to £35,000 depending on experience
This role is initially a Fixed Term contract (18 months) with the opportunity to become permanent
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Software Engineer to join a growing, successful and innovative company based in East Sussex.
Photek Ltd is a privately-owned company located in East Sussex currently employing just under 60 people. Our core business is the manufacturing of specialised imaging detectors and systems covering a diverse range of industries from aerospace to biomedical. Applications for such detectors include the detection of single photons and ultrafast cameras capable of sub nanosecond exposure times
The Software Engineer will be joining our R&D team, to support Photek’s range of photon detectors and camera systems. The role will involve the development and documentation of suitable drivers/APIs, close collaboration with Photek’s R&D team to implement image analysis algorithms and the development GUIs to allow analysis of data collected by the detectors.
In addition to development, successful applicants will assist with the roll out of AGILE development practices within Photek, e.g. the required infrastructure for continuous integration and automated testing.
Responsibilities:
- Driver/API development (C/C++, Labview) and documentation
- Development of high throughput image/data analysis applications using the most appropriate technology (GPU, custom FPGA, distributed computing)
- Testing of developed software with Photek's range of photon detectors
- Development/maintenance of test suites
- GUI Development as needed (using suitable cross-platform toolkit, e.g. Qt) for scientific applications of photon detectors
Required:
- Bachelors degree or higher in computer science, software engineering or related field (or equivalent industrial experience/certification)
- Proficient in C/C++
- Multi-platform driver API development/hardware interface (Windows/Linux/Mac)
- Multi-platform GUI development (Windows/Linux/Mac)
- Ability to test software with hardware in a laboratory
- User Documentation (API and GUI)
- Distributed version control (e.g. mercurial/git)
- Strong problem solving skills
Desirable:
- Python or other scripting language (usage, extending and embedding through C API)
- Integrating software and in development hardware in to commercial products
- Numerical computing
- Embedded/HDL development
- Database interfacing (SQL/Access)
Benefits:
- 20 days paid holiday, plus bank holidays. Plus 1 day per year of employment (up to a maximum of 5 extra days)
- Company pension based on salary, 4% employee contribution, 3% company contribution, 1% tax relief, making 8% total Contributions
