An exciting opportunity has arisen to help build the reputation and influence of Northern Gas Networks (NGN) both nationally and throughout the region. Reporting to the Head of Communications, you will play an important role in making sure the organisation communicates effectively with all external audiences - customers, stakeholders and media.

Key skills and experience:

  • Track record of effective media relations work (both proactive and reactive)
  • Track record of developing and implementing multi-channel communications plans
  • Crisis management experience and understanding of risks
  • Ability to quickly build personal credibility and a rapport with colleagues, journalists and stakeholders at all levels

The role:

  • Understand the organisation's brand and communications strategy, approach and objectives and ensure that it is reflected in all planning and delivery
  • Lead on the development and implementation of effective media handling and integrated external communications plans and campaigns to raise brand awareness and recognition
  • Oversee the day to day media relations work and build strong relationships with national and local media to raise positive profile of NGN
  • Manage external communications channels including social media, website development, advertising and events
  • Crisis management: Effectively lead and implement external communications response during incident situations to minimise reputational impact
  • Support with writing speeches and briefings for Chief Executive including preparation, drafting and delivery
  • Working with in house design team and external design agencies on the production of new assets and literature
  • Copywriting including press releases and articles
  • Tracking and reporting the impact and value of activity and benchmarking where possible
  • Line management of a Communications Officer

The candidate:

  • Degree educated (journalism, communications, business or marketing related degree is preferable)
  • Excellent writing and editorial skills
  • The ability to condense new and complex information into a clear and readable form; and to think strategically.
  • The personal skills to work effectively both with NGNs leadership team; with colleagues and with stakeholders in Government and other organisations.
  • Political intelligence and keen interest and sufficient knowledge of energy issues.

Essential criteria:

  • Minimum five years' experience in a communications related role
  • Excellent IT skills including MS Word, Outlook, Excel
  • Experience of dealing with sensitive issues and reputation management
  • Full driving license

The Package:

  • Personal Contract
  • 12 Month Fixed Term Contract
  • £37k - £41k per annum dependant upon skills & experience
  • Bonus - up to 10% of base pay (dependant upon achievement of objectives)
  • 40 hours per week
  • 25 days' annual leave per annum (plus bank holidays)
